Israeli PM secretly flies to Russia on the Sabbath to meet with Putin and then phones Zelensky in desperate bid for peace
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Vladimir Putin and later phoned Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the war in Ukraine
- In their three-hour meeting in the Kremlin, Bennett - a Jew - raised with Putin the issue of the large Jewish community caught up in the war in Ukraine
- He flew to Moscow in violation of Sabbath law because Judaism permits this when the aim is to preserve human life
- He phoned Zelensky after his meeting with Putin as he flew to Germany to discuss the meeting and had spoken to France prior to the meeting
- Bennett is coordinating crisis efforts with the US, France, and Germany
- The Israeli PM had offered last week to act as a mediator between the two countries, to which Putin had replied that he was 'ready for negotiation'

One great fortress was adorned with banners proclaiming 'Glory to the Ukrainian Navy!' Another frowning bastion across the water bore the words 'Glory to the Russian Navy!'
In the streets of that elegant city, with its porticoes and statues and monuments to repeated wars, sailors from the two fleets mingled on the pavements.
The Russians looked like Russians, with their huge hats and Edwardian uniforms. The Ukrainians looked more like the US Navy on shore leave in San Diego.
